B & E Boys completed the £800,000 refurbishment of existing classrooms, laboratories and extension of the dining room for Manchester Health Academy; a competitively tendered contract. The works were undertaken in two phases running concurrently. Phase One forming new classrooms within the existing school building consisting associated structural, mechanical and electrical alterations undertaken whilst the school was still occupied and completed over the summer holidays. Close liaison was required with the school to ensure student safeguarding and safety remained paramount at all times during site operations. Careful planning of deliveries and specific operations to avoid peak school times was necessary.
Phase Two was the construction of a new steel framed, brick, curtain walling and steel clad Dining Room, built off bottom driven steel piled foundation and ring beams in an area of the existing school yard, avoiding a plethora of buried services which resulted in a foundation re-design potentially jeopardising the completion of the works. A five week delay was overcome by a combination of acceleration, contractor led design changes and weekend work to ensure the project delivered on time.
