On Friday 15th May, B&E Boys were proud to attend the Your Lancashire, Your Future employer event in Blackburn, organised in partnership with the Lancashire Skills Pledge. Representing the company were Mike Carney and Dan Johnson-Ord, who spent the day helping Year 8 students explore the world of work, different career pathways, and the opportunities available within Lancashire’s growing industries.
The event was designed to bring the local labour market to life for young people, encouraging students to think about the sectors shaping the future of Lancashire and the skills needed to succeed within them.
Throughout the day, Mike and Dan took part in the Sector Carousel and Skills Arcade sessions, speaking with small groups of students in fun, interactive conversations. They shared insight into careers within the construction and built environment sector, discussing real job roles within B&E Boys, what working on-site is really like, and the variety of skills needed across the industry.
Using tools, equipment, PPE, and photos from live projects, they gave students a hands-on look into the sector and answered plenty of questions about day-to-day working life in construction. The sessions also encouraged students to think about how industries may evolve over the next 10 years, from advances in technology and sustainability to the future of green construction and changing workplace environments.
The event focused on helping students understand:
- What jobs exist within Lancashire
- Which industries are growing and changing
- The skills employers are looking for
- What different workplaces look and feel like
Events like this are incredibly important in helping young people discover careers they may never have previously considered. By speaking directly with employers, students gain valuable insight into real opportunities available close to home and the pathways they can take in the future.
Sarah Yarrow, one of the organisers, said “Thank you so much for yours and your colleagues’ time. It’s really appreciated and we really value your efforts on the day! It was great to see such good interaction and questions and you being able to have a good conversation with the students.”
B&E Boys are always proud to support initiatives that encourage the next generation, promote skills development, and showcase the exciting opportunities available within the construction industry and beyond.
