B&E Boys New Project at the Millennium Powerhouse

31st May 2024

B&E Boys are thrilled to announce their latest project – a refit scheme at The Millennium Powerhouse!

The Millennium Powerhouse, in Moss Side, is a fantastic facility which hosts a range of activities for young people. With everything from on-site libraries, mental health outreach services, sports and dance facilities and career connect, it is a crucial resource for the local area. Since its inception in 2000, they have been empowering young people to reach their potential with a whole host of services under one roof. We are thrilled to be assisting them on their journey.

This 24-week project will include the replacement of all external doors, windows and cladding and we will install a new silicone render finish over 140mm EPS insulation on the exterior walls. Additionally, we will strip and replace the existing roof with new single ply roof sheet over 180mm PIR insulation and then incorporate new roof lights to match existing. We will take every effort to ensure that the smooth running and access to the Millennium Powerhouse is not impacted due to these works.

These changes will serve several purposes. Whilst this will refresh the interior and exterior to something fresher, it will also improve the insulation of the building. This will mean lower heating and operational costs and a great energy efficiency rating. This is also part of a much larger decarbonisation scheme.

The aim of this development is to refit the building with decarbonisation in mind from the offset, so that not only will the ongoing running of the charity be lower in carbon emissions – the embedded carbon present in the materials used has also been factored in. The other factor in keeping carbon emissions low, is the resilience of the building.

The environmental impact of the building works we carry out is something that we keep in mind whenever we take on a project. We are materials conscious when completing works, always endeavour to use local suppliers and contractors and aim for buildings to be resilient and future proofed as much as possible. This is also not the first decarbonisation first project that we have completed! We have successfully completed BREEAM projects  as part of the schemes at Burnley College and Canon Medical Arena in Sheffield. These extensive works were completed with minimal disruption to occupants of the sites and safety of all those around was upheld to the highest of standards.
