Celebrating Women in Construction: The Heart of B&E Boys

6th March 2026

This International Women’s Day 2026 is the perfect moment to recognise the incredible contributions of women in the construction industry, and here at B&E Boys, we are proud to have talented women shaping our company every day.

Women in Construction: Progress Amid Challenges

The UK construction industry has long been male-dominated, and while progress has been made, women still represent only around 15% of the workforce as of early 2026. That figure, though modest, represents a steady rise over previous decades and a testament to the growing presence, ambition, and expertise of women across the sector.

Despite these gains, the industry faces ongoing challenges, particularly a long-term skills shortage. Over 47,000 new workers are needed annually – nearly 293,300 by 2029 – to meet demand in housing and infrastructure. Factors like an ageing workforce, high apprenticeship dropout rates, and post-pandemic recruitment gaps have left 76% of firms struggling to fill roles.

Women are uniquely positioned to help close this gap, bringing fresh perspectives, technical skills, and leadership potential to every corner of construction.

A Legacy of Inclusion

At B&E Boys, support for women in construction has been part of the company’s story from the very beginning. The business was founded in 1961 by both Brian and Elaine Boys – the “B” and the “E” in B&E Boys – meaning a woman has been at the heart of the company since day one.

That legacy continues today. Over the decades, B&E Boys has welcomed many talented women into the business, including numerous female work-experience students who have gained their first insights into the construction industry here. Many former female employees have also played important roles in the company’s journey, helping to shape the culture and success of the business over the years.

The Women of B&E Boys

Today, women are integral to every aspect of B&E Boys’ operations:

Construction: Katie, Adele, and Michele
Properties: Britt, Megan, and Shannon
Health, Safety & Environment: Becky
Finance: Susan, Lynn, and Chelsea
Facilities: Janet

Many of these team members have been part of the B&E Boys team for many years, building long careers within the company – something the business is incredibly proud of. Their experience, knowledge, and commitment are invaluable.

From managing complex projects to maintaining rigorous safety standards and ensuring financial excellence, their contributions are critical to the success of the company.

As Katie explains:

“Construction can be challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding to see a project come to life – and know that my work helped to make it happen.”

Unlocking Leadership Potential

A growing body of research highlights the positive impact of women in construction. Women bring expertise often cultivated over many years in the industry, and many are ready to take the next step into leadership roles.

Supportive workplace culture, flexible working, and visible encouragement from senior leaders are key enablers, helping women balance demanding roles with life outside work.

At B&E Boys, we are committed to building an environment where talent can flourish. Inclusion is not just about numbers – it’s about creating a culture and opportunities that allow everyone to contribute fully and progress confidently.

Looking Ahead: Building a Stronger Industry

International Women’s Day is a chance to celebrate achievement, but also to look forward. As the industry evolves, from digital transformation to net-zero initiatives, women will continue to play an increasingly vital role in shaping the future of construction.

The women at B&E Boys are living proof of what can be achieved with skill, ambition, and support. Their dedication drives projects forward, strengthens the company culture, and inspires the next generation of talent.

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate Katie, Adele, Michele, Britt, Megan, Shannon, Becky, Susan, Lynn, Chelsea, and Janet – along with the many women past and present who have contributed to the story of B&E Boys.

At B&E Boys, we are proud to stand with them, today and every day
