Millennium Powerhouse Project on Schedule

12th August 2024

B&E Boys’ Millennium Powerhouse Project is on Schedule with Strong Progress in Decarbonisation Efforts

B&E Boys is proud to announce that the project at the Millennium Powerhouse is on track and passing each milestone as expected with significant strides being made towards decarbonisation—an essential aspect of modern construction practices. Decarbonisation in the construction industry is vital due to its significant contribution to climate change. The industry is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, particularly carbon dioxide, which drives global warming and exacerbates the effects of climate change. By implementing cutting-edge sustainable practices and technologies, B&E Boys is playing a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and helping the UK meet its target of net-zero emissions by 2050.

Public demand for environmentally-friendly and sustainable solutions is also a key driver for decarbonisation. As awareness of environmental issues grows, consumers are increasingly seeking out companies that prioritise sustainability. By creating low or no carbon buildings, the occupants also benefit by lower heating and energy bills. By focusing on reducing carbon emissions, B&E Boys not only meets this consumer demand but also enhances its reputation and market competitiveness. This alignment with public values helps to attract environmentally-conscious clients and stakeholders, reinforcing the company’s commitment to responsible business practices.

Moreover, the pursuit of decarbonisation fosters innovation within the construction industry. It challenges companies to explore new technologies, materials, and methods that can reduce carbon footprints while also enhancing efficiency and cost-effectiveness. For B&E Boys, this commitment to innovation not only supports environmental goals but also drives progress within the industry. These advancements open up new opportunities for job creation and economic growth, positioning the company as a leader in both sustainability and technological innovation. We are committed to meeting the Governments regulatory requirements to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, ensuring not only compliance but also leadership in sustainable construction.

Project Highlights and Future Steps

Since the project’s inception, B&E Boys has implemented various measures to reduce carbon emissions, including the use of low-carbon materials, energy-efficient construction techniques, and sustainable waste management practices. As the project progresses, the company will continue to explore and adopt innovative solutions to further minimise its environmental impact.

To progress the decarbonisation works, we firstly installed new silicone render over new 140mm EPS insulation, fixed through existing retained external wall insulation and render and into the existing masonry substrate in accordance with Wetherby Building Systems specification.

The existing single ply flat roof coverings were carefully removed and disposed of in line with current regulations and a new Alwitra single ply roof sheet was installed over new 180mm PIR insulation on a bituminous membrane vapour control layer in accordance with ICB Waterproofing’s Roof specification, new roof lights were installed to all areas. All existing roof falls and rainwater outlets were retained. Prior to commencement, areas of existing ponding were identified, and adjustments were made by incorporating tapered insulation to alleviate water accumulation.

The existing windows were reduced in size by infilling the top and bottom sections with new 120mm SFS fixed between existing reveals before the render system was installed and lined internally. All finishes were made good. This was followed by the installation of new improved performance aluminium double glazed windows to suit the reduced apertures.

These changes will serve several purposes. Whilst this will refresh the interior and exterior to something fresher, it will also improve the insulation of the building. This will mean lower heating and operational costs and a great energy efficiency rating. This is also part of a much larger decarbonisation scheme. We have managed to make these changes with minimal disruption to the operation of the Millennium Powerhouse, completing works with the safety of everyone in mind.

“We are thrilled to be halfway through our Millennium Powerhouse project, and even more excited about the progress we’ve made in decarbonising our construction processes. This project not only demonstrates our commitment to sustainable building practices but also our dedication to supporting the UK’s broader environmental goals.”

We have successfully completed BREEAM projects  as part of the schemes at Burnley College and Canon Medical Arena in Sheffield. These extensive works were completed with minimal disruption to occupants of the sites and safety of all those around was upheld to the highest of standards.
