At B&E Boys, we are incredibly proud of Senior Quantity Surveyor Ryan Barnes, who has completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge for the second year running in memory of his brother-in-law, Liam Canning.
Covering 39km across Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, the challenge is demanding at the best of times. This year brought rain, sore legs, and plenty of moments where Ryan admits he was “halfway up a mountain, questioning every life choice!” – especially after confidently declaring “never again” following last year’s challenge.
Despite the conditions, Ryan completed the route once again and even beat his previous time.
The challenge holds deep personal meaning for Ryan and his family following the tragic loss of Liam in September 2024. Liam was known for his energy, determination, loyalty, and ability to bring people together wherever he went. His adventurous spirit and positive mindset continue to inspire everyone who knew him.
Throughout the walk, one phrase in particular stayed with Ryan: “It’s just one step in front of the other.”
Those words, often said by Liam himself, became the mindset that carried Ryan through every mile of the challenge.
This event is one of several fundraising activities taking place throughout the year in Liam’s memory, supporting two incredible mental health charities – LooseHeadz and We Evolve Project.
The main fundraising event will be the 2nd Annual Liam Canning Charity Cup on Sunday 14th June 2026 at Colne and Nelson Rugby Club, marking what would have been Liam’s 36th birthday. The day will bring together family, friends, teammates and supporters for rugby, football, live music, family activities and fundraising – all in Liam’s honour.
Liam lived life fearlessly and wholeheartedly. “Send it” wasn’t just something he said – it was how he approached everything he did. Through these events, his family and friends are determined to keep his legacy alive while continuing to encourage conversations around mental health and supporting those who may be struggling.
