60-week extensive refurbishment  project at Colne Municipal Hall

The work on behalf of our client Pendle Borough Council with partners Pendle Leisure Trust and Liberata, involved an extensive refurbishment as well as re-roofing work, new windows and doors, soft strip and renewal of the internal finishes and decoration. Mechanical and electrical upgrades will also be undertaken.

The project required a large volume of intricate detailing works to be undertaken to restore the building and retain the original Edwardian features.

Unfortunately, age-related structural issues were discovered part way through the project which needed be addressed urgently, for both safety and the preservation of an important cultural touchstone for the Colne community. In light of these discoveries, we undertook crucial repairs. We ensured that we respected the heritage of the building whilst working on the ceiling and repairing the old cornice work. We are fortunate that our contractors are already specialists in renewing lath and applying lime plaster with goat hair – a building process most used from the 1700’s to 1900’s.

Throughout the project, we integrated greater energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions – both of the building and the work we carried out. By using a local supply chain we reduced the environmental impact of the work and supported the local community.
