We are pleased to announce a new project at St. John’s CE Thornham Primary School in Middleton, Greater Manchester. B&E Boys have been awarded the building contract for this large project. It will run for 32 weeks and has a value of £1million.
Phase 1 of the works comprises the extension of the existing school building, including associated mechanical and electrical installations, and drainage and external works. Phase 2 consists of alterations of the existing building, including associated mechanical and electrical installations, drainage and external works. Finally, Phase 3 of the project will involve a range of internal modifications.
St. John’s CE Thornham describes itself as a ‘little school with a big heart.’ The school is proud to be a very friendly and caring place of learning. Central to everything the school does is the strong belief that all children can be what they want to be, both now and in the future. The school has a PAN (Published Admission Number) of 15 pupils in each year group, but organises some year groups creatively into particular cohorts. Reception and Year 1 are combined into the Explorers Class. The Discoverers Class consists of Year 2 and Year 3. Years 4 and 5 make up the Inventors Class. Last but not least, Year 6 are named the Adventurers Class.
The school aims to provide a stimulating learning environment enabling every child to fully develop as an individual. As well as pushing pupils to achieve their full academic potential, St. John’s also places a strong emphasis on developing personal and social skills too. All children are encouraged to value and fully consider the needs and feelings of others, as well as becoming resourceful and independent as individuals.
The school is excited to be having the building project completed as it will greatly enhance the facilities the school already has. Parents have been kept informed at every stage of the project so far. The school intends to post pictures regularly on its Twitter feed to show everyone how the project is progressing over the coming weeks and months.
The project will create two new classrooms and an intervention room, as well as new pupil and staff toilets, new fire exits, and a brand-new entrance area, with steps, ramps, and a lift. New doors into the hall will be added and all external corridors will become internal corridors in the re-shaped design. The existing conservatory will be removed. The windows from the oldest part of the building will become a feature of a new central hub. In addition, the Discoverers classroom will be knocked into the Inventors classroom, with a new corridor leading to the Explorers classroom. There will be also additional office space and a kitchenette. The overall design intends to create additional spaces that will complement the areas that the school already as, as well as providing new teaching and learning spaces.
The client for this extensive project is Rochdale MBC. The project follows on from the recently completed contract at Woodlands School in Heywood, which was also completed on behalf of Rochdale MBC. The contract at St. John’s CE Thornham Primary School’s demonstrates our ongoing relationship with existing client and continues our proud record of working in the education sector.
