Freddie’s Friends – Erica and Ethan’s Mount Kilimanjaro Challenge

20th June 2023

On Sunday Michael Boys’s wife, Erica and son, Ethan will set off to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, the world’s highest freestanding mountain at 5895m (19,341ft). Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano and one of the ’seven summits’ – the highest mountains of each of the continents. They will take the 8-day Lemosho Route, ascending through 5 climate zones (from tropical rainforest to the glacial ice cap zone), with the aim of standing atop the Roof of Africa on the 4th July.

The biggest challenges will not only be the altitude, oxygen depletion and low air pressure, but more importantly sleeping in a tent, with no showers, proper toilets or washing facilities for 8 days! STINKY!

Erica and Ethan are undertaking this trip as a personal challenge but would also welcome and appreciate any donations (however big or small) to a cause very close to their hearts. In November last year their niece, Aimee and her husband Mark suffered the ultimate unthinkable tragedy – the sudden and completely unexpected loss of their 13-month-old baby boy, Freddie. Freddie had no underlying health conditions and was hitting all his developmental milestones. He developed what was believed to be a simple chest infection, was checked at the hospital and sent home only to pass away in difficult circumstances 2 days later. They are now facing an inquest into his death. Having found that there is no specialist therapy for bereaved parents offered under the NHS, Aimee and Mark are now channelling their grief into launching a charity, Freddie’s Friends, that will support other bereaved parents following child loss.

You can read a little more of their story by clicking the link below and donate to this cause if you wish to.

Freddie’s Friends and Aimee & Mark would very much appreciate it, and it will certainly help spur Erica & Ethan on through the difficult miles at altitude.
